Fitter and Turner Pay Rates in Australian Mining

A practical guide to hourly rates, FIFO packages and workshop offers — and the questions behind the number on the job ad.

    Quick Answer

A useful Australian benchmark is $60 median hourly earnings for Metal Fitters and Machinists. Jobs and Skills Australia also reports $2,606 median full-time weekly earnings before tax, using ABS May 2025 data. These are published measures for a broader occupation group across industries — not a mining-only fitter-and-turner average or an award minimum. View the official earnings source.

For mining offers, compare the actual duties, roster, ordinary base rate, overtime, allowances and super. A weekly earnings figure and an hourly median are separate statistics; do not derive an hourly wage by dividing the weekly median by average working hours.

What do ABS and SEEK say about fitter and turner pay?

There are useful earnings benchmarks, but they measure different things. The official occupation data describes earnings across industries; SEEK describes disclosed advertised salaries. Neither establishes a single average rate for mining fitters and turners.

Source & measurePublished figureWhat it covers
JSA / ABS: median hourly earnings$60 per hourMetal Fitters and Machinists, ANZSCO 3232; ABS May 2025 customised report. Not mining-only or exclusively fitters and turners.
JSA / ABS: median full-time weekly earnings$2,606 per weekSame broader occupation group; before tax. A median is the middle of the earnings distribution, not the arithmetic average.
SEEK: Mackay & Coalfields average advertised annual salary$89,990 per yearFitter and Turner job-ad salary insights for the region, checked 25 October 2026. Includes non-mining roles; super and benefits treatment varies.

Jobs and Skills Australia’s Metal Fitters and Machinists profile publishes the $60 hourly and $2,606 weekly medians separately and identifies ABS Employee Earnings and Hours, May 2025, as the earnings source. Its narrower Fitter and Turners profile does not publish a weekly median. These ANZSCO profiles are retained historical data and will not be updated again; the reference period matters more than when you open the page.

SEEK’s salary insights are based on full-time salary ranges disclosed by employers in job ads. Some include superannuation and other benefits, while others do not. The $89,990 Mackay & Coalfields figure is a regional advertised benchmark, not an estimate of every worker’s actual earnings or a mining-only survey.

For an hourly mining comparison, start with the official $60 occupation benchmark, then check the specific offer. Do not treat that benchmark as a guaranteed base rate. A FIFO, shutdown or residential offer may combine different hours, penalties, allowances and employment conditions.

Which award usually covers a fitter and turner?

For an engineering workshop fitter, the Manufacturing Award is a sensible starting point to investigate. For qualifying ongoing maintenance at a non-coal mine, check the Mining Industry Award; for black-coal operations, check the Black Coal Mining Industry Award. These are relevant possibilities, not a ranking of how many fitters each award covers. There is no single award for every “mining fitter”.

An award is a legal minimum for pay and conditions, not a market-average salary. The $60 hourly earnings benchmark above is not an award rate. A higher advertised rate still needs a separate check for overtime, penalties, allowances and super.

Engineering workshop, machining or component repairsManufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award (MA000010)Check the employer’s industry and classification. It can also cover relevant engineering maintenance occupations where no other industry award has a more appropriate classification. Servicing mining clients does not automatically change a workshop’s award.
Ongoing plant maintenance at a non-coal mineMining Industry Award (MA000011)Check the defined mining activities and classification. Coverage includes specified plant maintenance and repairs where employees mainly do that work on an ongoing basis at a mining location. A one-off shutdown or contractor label alone does not establish coverage.
Maintenance associated with black-coal operationsBlack Coal Mining Industry Award (MA000001)Check its separate industry, employee and classification tests. Some work at or near a black-coal mine directly connected with day-to-day operations is covered. Not every contractor or person entering a coal site is automatically covered.

Fair Work’s mechanical fitter guidance confirms that the employer’s industry and employee’s duties determine coverage. A mine operator and its maintenance contractor can have different arrangements. These three awards are not an exhaustive list; another industry award may be more appropriate.

What if the employer has an enterprise agreement?

Check this first. A registered enterprise agreement that covers the employee generally supplies their pay and conditions instead of the award. Its base rate cannot fall below the applicable award base rate, and the National Employment Standards still apply. A company’s offer letter or employment contract is not itself a registered enterprise agreement. Read Fair Work’s award and agreement guidance and find the agreement through the Fair Work Commission.

How do I find my minimum rate?

The minimum depends on the applicable instrument and correct classification, not a generic “fitter rate”. Ask the employer: “Which award or registered agreement covers this role, what is my classification, and what are my ordinary base rate, overtime rates and allowances?”

    1. Identify the employer and work. Record the employer’s industry, your duties and whether you work mainly at a mine site, an engineering workshop or across clients.
    2. Check the industrial instrument. Ask for the name of the award or enterprise agreement. Search the agreement through the Fair Work Commission where relevant.
    3. Confirm the classification. Qualifications matter, but so do the actual skills, duties and responsibilities. Do not select a classification solely from the job title.
    4. Use the current pay period’s rates. Select permanent or casual employment, ordinary hours, shifts and overtime correctly. Pay guides change; an old screenshot is not a current pay check.

A trade certificate alone does not settle the classification. Check the award or agreement’s skill and responsibility descriptions, including any leading-hand duties, and use the current Fair Work pay guide rather than assuming a classification number or an old rate.

Hourly rate, salary or FIFO package: compare like with like

A headline figure is not enough to compare fitter and turner wages. A casual flat rate, a permanent base rate plus overtime and an annual FIFO package can describe very different employment conditions.

What to check in each pay offer
    Pay termQuestion to ask
Ordinary base rateWhat is paid for ordinary hours, before overtime and penalties?
Casual or permanentIs casual loading included? What paid leave applies?
Flat hourly rateWhich entitlements does it include, and how are extra hours reconciled?
FIFO annual packageWhat roster and paid hours underpin it? Is super inside or outside the figure?
Travel and campAre travel hours paid? Who covers flights, accommodation and meals?
Shutdown offerHow long is the job, and what work or pay is guaranteed between shutdowns?

    Annual cash offer comparison

Illustrative arithmetic only. Exclude super and non-cash benefits; use paid hours on the same basis for both offers.

    $62.50 per paid hour

This is not an ordinary hourly rate, take-home pay, a Fair Work compliance test or a forecast of earnings. Confirm how paid leave, unpaid breaks and travel are counted.

Why super and overtime need separate checks

The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025, generally applied to eligible ordinary time earnings. “Plus super” and “including super” are not interchangeable. Overtime and allowances can have different treatment; use ATO guidance rather than adding 12% to every payment by default.

Ask whether night shifts, weekends, public holidays, call-outs and extra swing days attract separate payments. An attractive flat rate should still be checked against the entitlements it is intended to satisfy.

Fitter and turner pay in Australia’s mining regions

Use location to narrow your search, not to assume a pay premium. Compare the actual duties and written conditions of roles in each region.

Mackay and the Bowen Basin, Queensland

Separate a town-based machining or repair workshop offer from coal-site maintenance, DIDO and shutdown work. Check coal-sector coverage, paid travel from Mackay, camp arrangements and the site roster.

    Explore regional contractor resources

Perth and the Pilbara, Western Australia

For FIFO offers, confirm the departure point, swing pattern, days versus nights and travel arrangements. Fixed-plant mechanical fitting and heavy diesel mobile-plant work are not automatically the same trade position.

    Explore regional contractor resources

Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, NSW

Compare residential workshop work with mine-site maintenance and shutdown scopes. Check the applicable instrument, on-call obligations, travel and whether the quoted rate assumes regular overtime.

    Explore regional contractor resources

The SEEK regional figure above is an advertised salary benchmark, not a mine-site wage survey. No Pilbara or Hunter Valley average is asserted here.

What changes a mining fitter’s pay offer?

Look beyond years of experience. Check whether the job involves precision machining, component rebuilds, fixed-plant maintenance, hydraulics, breakdown response or mobile equipment. A specialist skill can change the scope offered, but it does not guarantee a particular premium.

Leading-hand responsibility, permits, isolation requirements, shift patterns and employment continuity also matter. Tickets and site inductions can be prerequisites rather than extra-paid qualifications. Ask what the employer actually values and pays for.

Apprentices need a separate rate check. Our Australian apprentice pay guide covers the questions to ask before comparing apprenticeship offers.

For mining contractors: turn the offer into a clear pay record

Keep the applicable instrument, classification, employment type, roster and agreed allowances with the employee record. Capture actual hours by job and site, approve changes to shifts, and make the payslip calculation traceable. An agreed charge-out rate to a client is not the worker’s wage rate.

SprintSuite connects staff records, field and workshop time capture and payroll workflows. Pair those records with a checked award interpretation setup; software does not replace determining the correct coverage and entitlements.
