Our newest SprintSuite team member has arrived. He has the uniform, the smile and the personality — but he still needs a name.

To help find the right one, we have collected 50 quokka name ideas inspired by Western Australia’s coast, landscapes, towns, mining community and famously relaxed character.

You can also suggest a name of your own through SprintSuite’s Name Our Quokka competition. Every valid name submitted adds $1 to SprintSuite’s donation to the Rottnest Foundation, and one entrant will win a Rottnest Island getaway.

How do you choose a good name for a quokka?

A good quokka name should be easy to pronounce, distinctive enough to remember and suited to the animal’s friendly personality. Names with one or two syllables — such as Scout, Freo, Nugget or Reef — usually work particularly well for a mascot.

    Before submitting a name, ask:

    • Is it easy to say and spell?
    • Does it suit a cheerful, curious quokka?
    • Does it have a connection to Western Australia?
    • Will it still work on signs, social posts and at events?
    • Is it original enough to stand out from other entries?

The story behind a name can be just as important as the name itself. A simple suggestion becomes much stronger when you can explain what inspired it.

A note about Aboriginal language and place names

Wadjemup / Rottnest Island is a culturally significant place with a deep and complex Aboriginal history. It was used by Whadjuk Noongar people for important ceremonies and meetings before the island became separated from the mainland.

Aboriginal words should not be treated simply as novel mascot names. Their meaning, language group, spelling and cultural appropriateness should be verified with the relevant Traditional Owners or an authoritative Aboriginal organisation before commercial use.

For that reason, we have not used culturally significant Aboriginal names as casual mascot suggestions in this list. You can learn more through the official Aboriginal history of Wadjemup.
