There is no single standalone event officially branded the 'Taroom Trough Oil & Gas Conference'. What exists in 2026 is a cluster of conferences, technical workshops and regional industry evenings where the Taroom Trough is the headline topic — run by TSBE, PESA, Australian Energy Producers, AmCham Queensland and the Brisbane-hosted APOGCE. If someone points you at 'the Taroom Trough conference', they almost always mean one of these. This guide maps them so you book the right one.

The Taroom Trough is a deep sedimentary basin in southern inland Queensland, running broadly beneath the Taroom, Wandoan, Miles and Roma districts, east of the Moonie oilfields and underlying part of the Bowen and Surat Basin systems. It is being talked about as Australia's first potential major new oil province since the 1970s, with operators describing multi-TCF gas potential — Omega Oil & Gas has publicly referenced more than 10 TCF of gas plus several hundred million barrels of oil, and Elixir Energy has called it a 'Montney-sized' opportunity.

Three things converged. The Queensland Government appointed tenderers for new exploration acreage near Miles in February 2026, an area roughly the size of Singapore. In April 2026 it launched the Taroom Trough Development Plan, with the Coordinator-General directed to lead whole-of-government planning under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act, and asked Canberra to fast-track environmental approvals as a project of national interest. And operators are drilling: around 10 wells across 2026, with flow tests that will decide whether resource becomes reserve.

Operators and explorers (Omega Oil & Gas, Elixir Energy, Arrow Energy, Santos), the Office of the Coordinator-General and the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, service majors like Halliburton, drilling and completions contractors, civil and earthworks businesses, camp and logistics providers, local government from the Western Downs, Maranoa and Banana shires, and the Toowoomba and Roma supply chain. Investors attend the ASX-facing sessions; procurement people attend the regional ones.

The money in a new basin does not start at production. It starts with lease pads, access roads, water infrastructure, camps, laydown yards, fuel and lube, mobile plant maintenance, fabrication and pipeline spread support. Those packages get scoped 12-24 months before anyone flares a well. Contractors already working the Surat and Bowen Basins out of Toowoomba, Chinchilla, Miles, Roma and Wandoan are the natural supply chain — but only if they are visible and prequalified before the tenders drop.

Oil and gas prequalification is heavier than mining. Expect demand for a documented HSE management system, verified worker competencies and inductions, plant and equipment registers with current inspection and service history, lifting gear and pressure equipment certification, calibration records, environmental and land-access controls, insurances, and incident and near-miss reporting with evidence of close-out. Most rejections at prequal are not capability failures — they are evidence failures.

Send someone technical who can answer scope questions on the spot. Prioritise the sessions featuring the Coordinator-General and the operators' drilling schedules — that is your forward workload calendar. Ask each operator who runs their vendor prequalification and what platform they use, then start the process the same week.
