What is Whitehaven Coal? Mines, Contracts and Contractor Opportunities

Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX:WHC) is an ASX-listed pure-play coal producer headquartered in Sydney. Historically focused on the Gunnedah Basin in NSW, Whitehaven became one of Australia's largest coal miners in 2024 after acquiring the Daunia and Blackwater metallurgical coal mines from the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA).

Whitehaven's core NSW operations are in the Gunnedah Basin — Maules Creek (large open-cut, semi-soft coking and thermal), Narrabri (underground longwall, thermal), Tarrawonga (open-cut) and Werris Creek (open-cut thermal, being wound down). The Vickery project remains in development.

In 2024 Whitehaven acquired Daunia Mine (Bowen Basin, near Moranbah) and Blackwater Mine (near Blackwater, QLD) from BMA. Both are large open-cut metallurgical coal operations and materially expand Whitehaven's met-coal exposure — with significant contractor spend on mining services, maintenance and shutdowns.

With the BMA acquisitions, Whitehaven now controls two of the Bowen Basin's largest open-cut operations. For contractors, this means new procurement processes, new inductions and new commercial relationships alongside the existing NSW footprint.

Contractor engagement with Whitehaven follows standard Tier-1 practice — vendor prequalification, site induction, mining tickets, coal board medicals and compliance system enrolment. Site-specific requirements apply at each operation, and QLD sites still reference the BMA-era standards during transition.
