BULK Handling Technical Conference & Expo 2026: What Contractors Need to Know

BULK is Australia's only dedicated exhibition and conference for the bulk solids handling industry. It is a biennial event that pairs a working trade floor with an advanced technical conference curated by the Australian Society for Bulk Solids Handling (ASBSH). In 2026 the conference and the expo run side by side across the same two days, so engineers, maintainers, operators, procurement teams and contractors can cover technical content and suppliers in one trip.

BULK 2026 runs Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September 2026, 10am to 5pm daily, at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, 1 Convention Centre Place, South Wharf VIC 3006. Because it is biennial, this is the only Australian bulk-handling-specific show running in 2026 — miss it and the next one is two years away.

The ASBSH-curated program is genuinely technical, not vendor theatre. Expect sessions on flow properties and bulk material characterisation, storage and bin design, conveying solutions, dust mitigation, wear and abrasion challenges, system optimisation and real-world case studies. The audience skews to senior engineers, researchers, consultants and global specialists — the people who diagnose why a chute keeps blocking or why a liner package is failing early.

The show is organised around six themes: infrastructure investment and supply chain resilience; sustainable operations and emissions reduction including advanced dust control; innovation in automation and digitalisation covering smart conveyors, robotics, IIoT, digital twins and AI-powered maintenance; food security and agricultural productivity; skills development and workforce safety delivered with universities and training providers; and networking and celebration at the Australian Bulk Handling Awards.

BULK is deliberately cross-sector. Industries represented include mining and resources, ports, terminals and logistics, quarrying and extractives, cement, concrete and construction materials, agriculture and agribusiness, food and beverage manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and plastics, glass and rubber. On the 2024 numbers, the majority of attendees held purchasing authority — this is a decision-maker floor, not a browsing floor.

Almost every coal, iron ore and mineral sands site in Australia lives or dies on materials handling. If your crews do conveyor belt changeouts, idler and pulley replacements, chute and liner work, transfer point upgrades, dust suppression installs, screen and crusher maintenance or stockyard machine shutdowns, this is the one event where the entire supply chain behind that scope is in a single hall. It is also where you hear the failure modes before they land on your next shutdown scope.

The Australian Bulk Handling Awards are co-located with the event — the country's only awards program dedicated to bulk solids handling, recognising innovation, leadership and achievement across the sector. For contractors, awards nights are usually the highest-value hours of the whole trip: site leadership, engineers and procurement are relaxed, in one room, and actually talking. If you have delivered a standout conveyor or transfer-point project, it is also a credible submission opportunity.

Plan before you fly in. Pull the exhibitor list and conference agenda, shortlist 10–15 targets and request meetings in advance. Bring a one-page capability summary covering scope, crew size, regions serviced, certifications and insurances. Split your time: technical sessions in the morning for the engineering intelligence, expo floor in the afternoon for the commercial conversations. Ask about upcoming shutdown windows and prequalification requirements rather than pitching. Follow up inside 48 hours.

Skip the brochure conversation. Ask operators what materials handling scopes are coming to market in the next 12 months, who holds the head contract for site delivery, how prequalification works and which portal they use, what compliance evidence they need for competencies, medicals and inductions, and what mobilisation lead time they expect for an unplanned conveyor failure. Those five answers tell you whether to quote now or build for the next cycle.
