What Is the Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce? A Guide for Mackay Businesses

The Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce — often shortened to MRCCI (Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry) — is a member-based, not-for-profit business association headquartered at 120 Wood Street, Mackay. It is the region's peak business advocacy body: the organisation that speaks on behalf of local employers to council, state and federal government, utilities, and industry. It was established in 1887, which makes it one of the oldest continuously operating business bodies in regional Queensland, and it describes its role over those 130-plus years as playing a pivotal part in Mackay's development and growth.

This is the part that surprises people: the Chamber is not a club for big employers or a single industry. It represents every business in the wider Mackay region — “from the sole trader to multinationals based in Mackay” — and covers more than 10,000 organisations across every industry. In practice that means a one-person bookkeeping business, a 12-person hydraulics workshop, a café on Victoria Street, a labour hire firm servicing the Bowen Basin, a real estate agency and a national contractor all sit inside the same membership base. Mackay has two strong member bodies and they do different jobs. Resource Industry Network (RIN) is sector-specific: it represents the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) supply chain across the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday and Bowen Basin regions, and its value is proximity to miners, terminals and principal contractors. The Chamber is place-specific: it represents business of every kind in the Mackay region and focuses on the operating environment — advocacy on local issues, employment and HR support, education and cross-industry connection. The Chamber's advocacy work is the reason it exists. It publishes a 2025–2028 Strategy and a constitution publicly, and members can raise issues directly through the committee. The Chamber's flagship event is the Best in Business Awards, relaunched on 29 August 2024 at the Mackay Masonic Hall — a sold-out night of 150-plus attendees with a keynote from Tom Potter, founder of Eagle Boys. The next edition is scheduled for 29 May 2026 at the Mackay Turf Club, timed to close Queensland Small Business Month.
